Funding Opportunity for Energy Projects

The European Commission has launched the Global Gateway Early-Stage Investment Mechanism, a grant programme supporting the early-stage preparation and pilot development of strategic infrastructure projects, including in the energy sector. By mobilising EU private sector expertise and technology, the call helps promising projects move from concept to implementation, reduces early-stage risks, promotes EU standards, and supports sustainable development and the green transition in partner countries.

Under the Energy lot, eligible activities may include early-stage work related to renewable energy (such as wind, solar, hydro and geothermal), electricity transmission and distribution, grid modernisation, energy efficiency, hydrogen, storage technologies, and energy-related manufacturing. Grants range from EUR 500,000 to EUR 2 million and may cover up to 90% of eligible costs (and in duly justified cases up to 100%).

In terms of geographic scope, energy actions must be implemented under the NDICI–Global Europe framework, with at least 70% of the grant funds implemented in DG INTPA partner countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean, or Asia and the Pacific. This means that while the main focus of activities must be in these eligible regions, a limited share of activities (up to 30%) may take place outside them, provided all other eligibility conditions are met.
